A Tyler man accused in the July 1 shooting death of Rodney Earl Walker, 52, has been arrested and charged with first degree murder.

Police Wednesday formally charged Christopher Shane Wiley, 39, with Walker’s murder. Officers arrested Wiley at his hospital room where he has been recovering after attempting to take his own life following the murder.

Wiley will remain under protective custody until he is released from the hospital and transported to Smith County Jail. Wiley’s bond has been set at $500,000.

According to Tyler Police, officers responded Monday around 3 a.m. to a welfare call at 311 East First St. where they discovered Walker dead of a gunshot wound.
