The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to review the case of a Texas death row inmate who is set to die next week for an East Texas slaying more than two decades ago.

The high court made no comment Monday in rejecting the case of 50-year-old Rickey Lynn Lewis.

The Tyler man was on parole for a third burglary conviction when he was arrested for breaking into a Smith County home in September 1990, fatally shooting 45-year-old George Ray Newman who lived there. Evidence showed he also raped Newman’s fiancée before he stole her car and killed her dog.

She managed to climb out a bathroom window after the attack and call police. Her testimony at his capital murder trial helped send Lewis to death row.

Lewis faces lethal injection April 9.
