Today (December 27th), we are in the second day of Kwanzaa.

From the official Kwanzaa website this holiday was created by Dr. Maulana Karanga, who is a professor of African Studies which last for seven days that focuses on the family, community, and culture around the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principals)

  • Umoja – Unity
  • Kujichagulia – Self Determination
  • Ujima – Collective Work and Responsibility
  • Ujamaa – Cooperative Economics
  • Nia – Purpose
  • Kuumba – Creativity
  • Imani – Faith
KUJICHAGULIA for
SELF DETERMINATION.

This principle we are to focus on the fight to preserve as we work diligently to overcome discrimination and adversity in our daily lives.  This is a call for African Americans to defend, define, and develop ourselves instead of allowing our encouraging other to do it for us.

The Tyler Public Library is hosting their annual Kwanzaa celebration nightly starting at 6 p.m.
