Happy first day of Kwanzaa!

Today (December 26th) kickoff the 53rd anniversary of Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa is a holiday created by Dr. Maulana Karanga, a professor of African Studies that last for seven days which focuses on family, community, and culture per the official Kwanzaa website.

During this festive holiday we plan activities around the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles)

  • Umoja – Unity
  • Kujichagulia – Self Determination
  • Ujima – Collective Work and Responsibility
  • Ujamaa – Cooperative Economics
  • Nia – Purpose
  • Kuumba – Creativity
  • Imani – Faith

Today we light the candle for the 1st principle of Kwanzaa: UMOJA which is for UNITY.

Umoja, brings to light the importance of togetherness as a community, family and culture.

It's reflected in the African Proverb "I AM because WE ARE."

These words should inspire us daily that our communities are responsible for one another and if we all can work together for that common goal the sky will be the limit.
