Scarface, Solange and Z-Ro Respond to Shooting Deaths with Powerful Music

Along with Jay Z’s “Spiritual,” several artists have released songs in response to the recent shootings of civilians and the Dallas police department. Swizz Beatz and Scarface along with Solange and Houston rhymer Z-Ro have dropped songs that address the rash of violent shootings that has left America in mourning.

The Swizz/’Face collaboration “Sad News” is a poignant song dedicated to Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two unarmed men who were shot and killed by police in Louisiana and Minnesota, respectively. Scarface delivers a hardened verse that reflects on some of the growing tensions in the black community over police misconduct.

"For all the homies shot down by white boys and not one convicted / Of wrongdoing, is it justice we pursuing / Freedom from death, beat 'em to death, f--- 'em / I will awake the sleeping giants, with one last word," he spits.

Meanwhile, Solange, who is a mother of an 11 year-old son, went on Instagram on Thursday (July 7) to express her thoughts of the shooting deaths with a verse from Syreeta's "Black Maybe," which was written by Steve Wonder.

In the caption accompanying the short clip, she writes: “Been singing Syreeta's "Black Maybe" over and over again trying to comfort my weary heart. But what is comfort when the images of slain black bodies left to bleed, is sketched into your being over and over again?"

Finally, super producer Mike Dean teamed up with Houston native Z-Ro to record a song called "No Justice, No Peace." Over a thumping beat and a downing piano groove, Z-Ro delivers thought-provoking rhymes about black people dying by the hands of police.

"No Justice, no peace / It's us against police / Every time I turn around they shoot another brother in these cold, cold streets," he raps.
