Soul man Robin Thicke kicked off the ‘Good Morning America’ summer concert series today with a performance outside the ABC morning show’s studio in New York. The ‘Duets‘ mentor also chatted about the first night of the program and the “special spark” that his proteges possess.

Thicke opened his live performance with ‘All Tied Up,’ a track from his most recent album, 2011′s ‘Love After War.’ The ladies swooned as Thicke, clad in a leather jacket and black jeans, crooned the falsetto-heavy slow jam about romantic desire.

After singing, Thicke spoke to the ‘GMA’ hosts about his ‘Duets’ performance of ‘Let Me Entertain You’ with John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Nettles. “That was pretty exciting, because to be on stage with that kind of talent, it felt like a mini-awards show or something,” he observed.

Why did Thicke choose Olivia Chisholm and Alexis Foster to mentor? “You kinda look for that special spark. There’s a lot of people with a great voice out there, but you look for that special something, that magic in their spirit. Everybody’s gotta keep working to get better each week, so you just look for somebody who you’re willing to work with and hopefully has that special twinkle in their eye.”
