Pharrell Williams Opens Up About Ego & More in GQ Interview

There are lot of things Pharrell Williams is happy about at the moment. His new album, 'G I R L,' hits stores next week and his song 'Happy' is the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In his interview with GQ magazine, the veteran hitmaker opens up about his success, his music and even Tyler, the Creator chimes in on the super producer.

During his chat, Pharrell reveals that his last solo effort, 2006’s 'In My Mind' was a mindless album and nothing to brag about.

"I wrote those songs out of ego," he tells the publication. "Talking about the money I was making and the by-products of living that lifestyle. What was good about that? What'd you get out of it? There was no purpose. I was so under the wrong impression at that time."

“The money was too loud. The success was too much. The girls were too beautiful. The jewelry was too shiny. The cars were too fast. The houses were too big," he added. "It’s like not knowing how to swim and being thrown in the ocean for the ﬁrst time. Everything is just too crazy."

Elsewhere in the interview, Odd Future leader Tyler, the Creator. talks about being influenced by today's enterprising rappers.

"Being a young black kid, especially at that time, I was different from all my other peers," Tyler explains. "So when I seen that this dude was saying he was open to rock and jazz and f---ing skateboarding and all this other stuff that I was interested in, I was gravitating toward it because it was like: ‘All right, I’m not the only black dude who’s probably called weird every f---ing day.’”

As for his new project, which has already received some backlash for its cover, Skateboard P says it was inspired by the women in his life.

"I instantly knew that the name of the album was called 'G I R L' and the reason why is because women and girls, for the most part, have just been so loyal to me and supported me," he says. "There is no breathing human being on this planet that did not beneﬁt by a woman saying yes twice. Yes to make you, and yes to have you. Point-blank."
