A Tyler man is dead after a police officer was forced to shoot the man after the suspect pointed a handgun at the officer.

Tyler police responded to the call at 603 East Queen Street, when officers received reports of numerous gunshots at the residence. When police arrived around midnight New Year’s Eve, they confronted 22-year-old Victor Fuentes, who was holding a weapon. Police identified themselves and gave commands to drop the weapon. Fuentes failed to comply and pointed the handgun at officer Matt Riggle, who fired his rifle several times striking Fuentes.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy has been ordered and the Texas Rangers are assisting the Tyler Police Department into the internal investigation.

Officer Riggle, who has worked for Tyler Police since 2008, is on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.
