Former Philadelphia 76ers center Moses Malone died in his hotel room in Norfolk, Va., on Sunday (Sept. 13). He was 60 years old.

According to several reports, the NBA legend may have passed away in his sleep from a heart attack although the cause of his death has not been confirmed. ESPN reports that the NBA legend's body was discovered when he failed to report to a celebrity golf tournament in which he was scheduled to play.

Malone, who was affectionately nicknamed “Chairman of the Boards” for his impressive rebound record, played five seasons with the Sixers and led them to an NBA championship title in 1983.

The Philadelphia 76ers released a statement on Malone’s passing. It reads in part:

It is with a deep sense of sadness that the Sixers family mourns the sudden loss of Moses Malone. It is difficult to express what his contributions to this organization - both as a friend and player - have meant to us, the city of Philadelphia and his faithful fans.

His generosity, towering personality and incomparable sense of humor will truly be missed. We will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers and as we are once again reminded of the preciousness of life."

Malone went on to snag three NBA MVP trophies (1979, 1982 and 1983) and a 12-year consecutive run at the NBA All-Star Game. He currently sits eighth on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 27,409 career points, and fifth in rebounds with 16,212. Malone was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2001.
