This Quote From MLK Jr. Brought Me Peace After The D.C. Attack

I had a moment to myself to sit down and think about what recently happened at the United States Capitol yesterday and how deeply disappointed I was along with many Americans and people from around the world. To see the Capitol infiltrated and ransacked by an insurrection of rioters was deeply disappointing and embarrassing. The rioters spoke to reporters on the scene and said they were there revolting because they wanted to "take their country back"--but from whom specifically, I would like to know.

There were several Texas legislators who were scared during the attack on the Capitol and they had to "find a place to hide or seek cover", as the Texas Tribune reports.

There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love. I love this country, for all its faults and missteps, I truly love living in the quote, "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave". And I love the people I have come to know here. We as Black people truly care, and I would submit that Black womxn and Black men have a deep love for a country that generally does not do right by us, but we still strive to work our tails off to make things a better place to live for all of America.

Black people truly love America, we are its backbone. You can't tell me otherwise. Look at how we have come thru in recent elections. In the 2018 election, Black women especially came through to save Alabama by helping to elect Doug Jones to the United States Senate. In the 2020 elections, Black people all over this country, especially in urban cities, have come thru for America by casting votes en masse for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Most recently in the 2021 election in Georgia, it was the Black votes who came through for Reverend Warnock and Jon Ossoff! We saved the day and rescued the Senate from "Move, Mitch, Get Out The Way" McConnell!

We collectively as Black people have a deep love for America and now we see the pushback from domestic terrorists, not just in D.C., but in cities all over the country. They destroy our Black Lives Matter signs and even attack federal buildings whilst federal public servants are inside. It's a hot mess.

So today, that quote from Dr. King Jr. leaped out to me from my computer screen as I prepared a speech for a virtual MLK event coming up. There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love, so let's work hard to keep love alive!
