Lalah Hathaway paid tribute to Anita Baker who celebrated her 57th birthday on Thursday (Jan. 26). Hathaway, who is the daughter of soul icon Donny Hathaway, delivered a heavenly cover of Baker’s 1983 “Angel” with vocal assistance from BJ the Chicago Kid.

The two singers, who are both Chicagoans, don’t disappoint on their elegant cover song. Hathaway with her smoldering vocals complements BJ’s falsetto so perfectly. The song itself features a light drumming, a soft piano groove and an electric guitar riffs. Overall, it’s a sumptuous tune that will no doubt make Anita Baker very proud.

The song also comes as Baker announced that she is retiring from music and enjoying her new life sunbathing on the beach. “Lotta rumours out there. No Tour. No CD. #Retired #BeachBum #ThankUJesus,” she tweeted to her followers. “Oh, no regrets," she added. “Music has been/is very good 2 us. God Gifted in every possible way. We just stay “humble. I still love 2 write & record music...its part of my DNA. But, im on a different road.”
