Facebook has made the announcement that the company has suffered a security breach in which 50 million user’s accounts were hacked letting hackers take over the accounts and other personal information.

According to the New York Times, Facebook’s Vice President of Product Management Guy Rosen said in a statement,

Since we’ve only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed. We also don’t know who’s behind these attacks or where they’re based.

90 million Facebook users will have their accounts reset, in which the next time they log in they will see a message indicating what happened.

Facebook CEO Mark Zukerberg also addressed the situation on his personal page saying while they are glad they found and fix the situation the reality is the company need to continue to develop new tools to prevent this from happening.

There are 1.47 billion users that use Facebook daily worldwide.
