The Texas Rangers have arrested an East Texas Sheriff on charges of tampering with government records to defraud or harm abuse of official capacity, and theft by a public servant.

Panola County Sheriff Rob Clinton was taken into custody Thursday, just two months after being sworn into office. He was released from jail on a $50,000 bond.

According to the Panola Watchman, the county courthouse was evacuated late Thursday afternoon before Sheriff Clinton’s arrest.

A reporter for the Watchman was at the courthouse working on another story at the time of the Sheriffs arrest and was able to confirm through an anonymous source the courthouse evacuation was planned in anticipation of Sheriff Clinton’s arrest.
