East Texas Justice of the Peace Shot + His Wife Jailed

A Gregg County Justice of the Peace is hospitalized and his wife is jailed for allegedly shooting him during an argument over the weekend.

Gregg County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Sam Lawson is listed in critical condition. Jail records show Ira Lawson was booked Sunday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon-family violence.

Longview police spokeswoman Kristie Brian says the shooting happened late Saturday at the couple's home. Brian said police have a history of domestic-related calls to the residence.

A handgun has been recovered. Brian had no details on the owner.

Lawson was elected justice of the peace in 1987.
