A woman in Mexico City is doing well after a recent heart transplant, even though two medics dropped the organ on the ground in a rush to get it to the hospital for surgery.

A couple of weeks ago, a pair of Mexican medical technicians became the target of worldwide ridicule when they spilled the contents of a cooler carrying a human heart on the pavement outside a Mexico City hospital while being filmed by a news crew. The organ had been rushed by plane and then helicopter, and had made it all the way to Mexico City only to be spilled by the two hurried men.

Since the heart was properly packaged, doctors felt it was safe to go ahead with the four hour surgery. The doctors were right and the medics can now breathe a sigh of relief, because recipient Erika Hernandez has been released from the hospital. She left La Raza hospital in a wheelchair, but looked healthy and rosey-cheeked.

Hernandez, 27, was born with a heart defect and appeared with two other transplant patients at a recent press conference. She said, “I cannont believe that I’m still here and well. It is thanks to the person who donated the heart I can be here.” The donor was 20-year-old Rafael Gomez, who was declared brain dead after he was involved in a car crash.

Because she was in the hospital, Hernandez was not aware that the medics who brought her heart had become the recipients of ridicule. Her doctor says it’s up to her family to decide if they want her to know. So, uh, we suggest that she stays off the internet for a while.
