Mary J. Blige had a nearly career-ending battle with drugs and alcohol — but in the end, love saved all.

In the latest episode of VH1′s ‘Behind the Music,’ the hip-hop legend reveals how it was the love and support of her husband, Martin Kendu Isaacs, that helped put her back on the right track.

“I stopped drinking,” she says. “It was will power. It was prayer. It was really hard. But, I cared so much about [Isaacs], I didn’t want to be just this alcoholic burden on him. He doesn’t deserve for me to be some, you know, slum-bucket alcoholic, and so I took responsibility and I cleaned up, as much as I could. But it was hard.”

In addition to profiling her rise to fame and her ensuing struggles, the program also includes interviews with Blige’s family members and famous friends, such as Diddy.

‘Behind the Music: Mary J. Blige’ premieres July 24 at 10 p.m. ET on VH1.
