Demi Lovato, perhaps taking a cue from her idol Kelly Clarkson, has done her share of awesome covers live. She turned it up a notch at a recent Holmdel, N.J. tour stop when she performed Chris Brown‘s hit ‘Turn Up the Music.’Lovato opened the track as a piano ballad, tickling the ivories and singing the “Whoa-oh-whoa-oh-whoa-oh-ohhhh” hook in a way more emotive and move-motivating. Soon, Lovato gets up from behind the Baby Grand, dancing around in her bright red high-waisted leather shorts, silver jacket, multicolored necklaces, black mesh top and matching tights. Her blonde and pink hair whipped back and forth while she danced, putting Willow Smith to shame.

The ‘X Factor‘ judge shows her vocal chops (so you can shut up now, John Legend) throughout the track, belting out not only the lyrics, but her own soulful ad libs.

The cover is not only just a good time for Demz and her Lovatics, but may also be a testament to how far Breezy’s come. Demi has a young, predominantly female fanbase and she’s a strong rolemodel for them, so covering a Chris Brown track, however ubiquitous, is still a somewhat risky move considering his reputation following the 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna. In any case, she did an awesome job with it!
