TYLER -- The cause of a house fire in Tyler on Tuesday afternoon remains under investigation. Firefighters responded to the two-alarm blaze at 606 North Northwest Loop 323. The fire originated in the living room area, near a sofa. The structure suffered heavy fire damage in the room of origin, as well as heavy smoke damage throughout. No injuries were reported.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Not much rest for the Republican presidential candidates after the New Hampshire primary. Last night's winner, Mitt Romney, and his GOP rivals plan to campaign in South Carolina today. Its primary is Jan. 21. And Florida's contest is 10 days after that.

Rick Perry's Hope Lies in South Carolina

PICKENS, S.C. (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry is banking on his southern charm as his campaign shifts to South Carolina. The Texas governor has settled in for about two weeks of campaigning ahead of the state's January 21st primary. Perry had a dismal finish in the Iowa caucuses and all but skipped the New Hampshire GOP primary.

 

Twinkie Maker Files for Chapter 11

NEW YORK (AP) — The maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Irving-based Hostess Brands filed for the protection today, blaming troubles with its pension and medical benefits obligations, increased competition and tough economic conditions. Hostess says it will be able to maintain routine operations.

'Curiosity' Set For Mars Mission

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A NASA spacecraft is aiming for an August landing on Mars. The one-ton rover nicknamed Curiosity is poised to fire its thrusters Wednesday to put itself on course. The maneuver is expected to last nearly three hours and will be tracked by deep space antennas. Engineers have several more chances over the next several months to fine-tune Curiosity's flight path before touchdown inside a crater near the Martian equator. The goal of the $2.5 billion mission is to see whether Mars, now cold and barren, might have been suitable for microbial life.
