That Spooky Nun From ‘The Conjuring 2’ Is Getting Her Own Spinoff

Like that creepy doll from The Conjuring, that creepy nun from James Wan’s The Conjuring 2 will also get her own spinoff, further expanding the spooky Wan-iverse. The director’s fictional versions of famous paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren have housed an entire collection of keepsakes and haunted objects from their cases, meaning there’s no shortage of possibilities for Wan’s ever-growing franchise.

THR reports that the Black Metal nun from The Conjuring 2 is the next creeper to get her own franchise spinoff, simply titled The Nun. Co-writer David Leslie Johnson is drafting the screenplay for New Line, which also backed Annabelle and the upcoming Annabelle 2, based on the eerie little doll from The Conjuring — which was itself based on a real-life case involving an allegedly haunted doll that looked far more harmless than Wan’s version.

Per the latest report, the original vision for the antagonist that torments Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s Warrens was a demonic spirit with horns, but Wan changed it to the severely spooky nun at the last minute. It’s definitely a more visually striking villain, and far more appropriate given Lorraine’s religious faith. The nun also happens to deliver the best scare of the sequel in a sequence involving a painting in Ed and Lorraine’s study.

No word yet on when The Nun might creep her way back into theaters, but with New Line’s lower budget approach, we may see this one hit theaters next fall.
