Turns out the pet monkey that Chris Brown owned could get him into legal trouble.

TMZ reports that the singer never got a permit for said monkey, and the animal has since been confiscated. Brown could also face legal charges.

Blame social media. After Brown posted a photo of the monkey, named Fiji, with his three-year-old daughter, Royalty, everyone was up in arms because they didn't it was safe for the toddler to own a wild animal. Brown clarified that the pet was his and that Royalty would only get to see it when she was at his house.

At any rate, someone reportedly called the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife anyway, and they opened an investigation, only to find out that Brown never got a permit for the animal. Authorities got a warrant to search Brown's home, and ended up confiscating the animal.

Now, if charged, Brown could face up to six months in jail on a misdemeanor charge for not having a permit. The case has been turned over to the L.A. City Attorney.

Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, says the entire thing is absurd since the country has real issues to handle.

He told TMZ, "As I leave my office in Downtown L.A. and walk past people sleeping on the street on my way to defend people charged by the City Attorney with selling medical marijuana ... now spending taxpayer money on investigating monkey business, this completes the circle on his absurdity."
