Buckle Up, This Year’s Hurricane Season May Disrupt Your Travel Plans

Although coronavirus is the top trending headline across the country (the world too) right now, there's another season on the rise set to bring its own national headlines; the 2020 hurricane season. According to early meteorologist data, it can be a big one.

Following last year's season and storms like Hurricane Dorian, it's expected to be another busy year. Hurricane season starts on June 1 and lasts until Nov. 30. AccuWeather's meteorologists believe the Atlantic basin will see 14 to 18 tropical storms during this upcoming season.

Of those storms, seven to nine are forecast to become hurricanes, and two to four are predicted to strengthen into major hurricanes.

"It's going to be an above-normal season," said Dan Kottlowski, AccuWeather's top hurricane expert. "On a normal year, we have around 12 storms, six hurricanes and roughly three major hurricanes."

The 2019 hurricane season saw hurricanes Dorian, Lorenzo and Humberto as well as Tropical Storm Imelda. It resulted in 18 storms overall and caused more than $11 billion in damage.
