The Force Awakens was a pretty epic return to the world of Star Wars, and it’ll be interesting to see how Rian Johnson follows it up with Episode VIII. We’ve seen a few set photos (though nothing particularly revealing), but with the sequel not hitting theaters until December 2017, it’s going to be quite a while before we see anything substantial. While John Boyega isn’t at liberty to say too much about Episode VIII, he does offer a couple of pieces of info that should help you manage your expectations.

Boyega is reprising his role as Finn in Episode VIII, which is currently in production with director Rian Johnson. As Boyega tells Variety, Johnson has “a different take, darker, bigger,” for the sequel, and if you’re wondering how on Earth (or a galaxy far, far away) Episode VIII could be bigger than The Force Awakens, the actor admits:

Someone will say: ‘How do you get bigger than Force Awakens? But it’s crazy.

It’s just crazy, okay? That’s all you need to know.

Okay, fine, one more thing: Boyega was asked about a potential romance between Finn and Daisy Ridley’s Rey, since there are plenty of fans who have been ’shipping the couple. If you’re one of those fans, then prepare to have your heart broken because Boyega says they’re just friends:

I mean, we didn’t establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way. Daisy and I, we’re friends. Finn and Rey – they’re just friends. Finn is a storm trooper, so he doesn’t really know what’s going on. So the romance thing is something that’s going to be interesting in the next installment. It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go.

While that may be disappointing to some, it’s actually quite heartening to know that Episode VIII will continue to subvert expectations. Finn and Rey falling for each other would be too easy and way too obvious. Unfortunately, Boyega doesn’t address the bigger contingency of fans who have been ’shipping Finn and Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron — so there’s still hope for you guys.

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
