Although Black Panther is still No. 1 at the box office, another Disney film performed well at the theaters over the three-day weekend. The Ava DuVernay-directed fantasy-adventure movie, A Wrinkle in Time, opened with $33.5 million to finished in second place.

According to comScore, which tracks box office receipts and demographics, a total of 37 percent of audiences gave Wrinkle an “excellent” rating with another 38 percent rating it “very good.”

“That is very strong and makes sense with the PG rating, the subject matter and young people’s love for the book,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore (via Reuters).

The weekend also marks the first time in recent memory that two films directed by African-Americans have nabbed the first and second place spots at the box office. For Disney, it's a win-win all around for them and for moviegoers.

“When you think about having two films at the top of the box office, it’s definitely a win all around,” said Disney’s worldwide theatrical distribution president Dave Hollis (via Time). “We’re feeling good about this start."

As we previously reported, Black Panther reached the $1 billion threshold after four weeks in the theaters. The superhero tentpole joins a list of films in the $1 billion movie club. The last flick to achieve this plateau was Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017.

Meanwhile, Chadwick Boseman will reprise his role as T'Challa (aka Black Panther) in Marvel's upcoming Avengers sequel, Infinity War, which is due to arrive in theaters on May 4.
