‘X-Men’ Producer Simon Kinberg Says the Next Sequel Will Take Place in the ’90s

X-Men: First Class took place in the ’60s. X-Men: Days of Future Past moved to the ’70s. Apocalypse is set in the ’80s. Like one of those “what comes next” questions on an IQ test, you can probably guess where this is going, but just in case you had any doubt, producer Simon Kinberg says — get ready — that the next X-Men sequel will take place in the ’90s. Jennifer Lawrence would probably look pretty cute in a choker necklace, to be honest.

During the junket for X-Men: Apocalypse (you can read our early review of the film here), Kinberg confirmed the period setting for the next X-Men sequel (via Coming Soon), which should add further confusion to the franchise’s already-wonky continuity. As many have pointed out today on Twitter, the ages of some of these characters just don’t add up — shouldn’t Magneto be 50-ish in Apocalypse? Maybe we can just chalk all of this up to a slower aging process for mutants or whatever.

At any rate, Bryan Singer is taking a break from X-Men to direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but he’s expressed an interest in returning to the franchise — as to when we’ll get another X-Men sequel, that could be a few more years or so, but in the meantime, Fox is developing New Mutants, a Deadpool sequel and X-Force. And there’s still Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie, which may or may not be dead.
