Watch How Quickly a Christmas Tree Fire Can Destroy a House
We always hear warnings about the fire risk with Christmas trees, but have you ever seen how quickly one can spread if the tree gets dry? This is pretty shocking.
This video was part of a fire awareness campaign in 2010 and it's been viewed more than 1 million times on YouTube so far. The first flame shows up in the Christmas tree, and about a minute later there's nothing left.
The Today Show also did an experiment of their own this week showing what happens if the tree hasn't been watered enough and is really dry. Heat from the lights, or a faulty wire can start a branch on fire and the flames consume a room in 30 to 90 seconds.
That's not even enough time to call 911, and it's barely enough time to get out of the house.
Heads up! If you have a real tree, keep it watered. And whether the tree is real or fake, don't leave the lights on constantly because it's too risky.
Yikes. Have a safe holiday season.
