This is the time of year when I immerse myself in loads of self-help reading. Studies show that not only do most people want to be happier, but also want to know where to start to get there! My latest self-help read has taught me that there are 5 things that we must STOP doing in order to live a happier life. Read more to find out how to be happier!

STOP worrying about things you can't control.

If everything in life were easy, then we wouldn't know what a blessing feels like. Often, we freak out about things that are beyond our control. Worrying only causes unnecessary stress, which is unhealthy. Worry about the things that you can directly control, and the rest will fall into place.

STOP trying to please everyone.

You aren't a doormat, are you? If your forehead doesn't have WELCOME written across it, then you probably aren't to be walked on. In other words, if there is something you can't do, or don't want to do.... It's OK to say "No" or "I can't." Chances are you are always trying to make everyone around you happy. Channel your inner Janet Jackson, and think, "What Have You Done For Me Lately?"

STOP raising your voice when upset.

It's simple: Stop letting your anger get the best of you. Raising your voice when you are angry not only makes the situation worse, but your response to things expressing anger is something your kids, and people around you notice. Plus, new studies have shown that yelling out of anger is bad for your heart.

STOP neglecting your health.

You only get one body in this life, so take care of it! Annual check ups and health screenings are so important. Knowing what health problems you have, or could have -- and early detection will make you happier. How? Because your mind will be at ease. Mammograms, blood tests, prostate exams, and colon screenings are extremely vital. Happy people know their bodies and how to take care of them.

STOP not taking time for you.

You take care of everyone else. Who takes care of you? Simple pleasures in life, like reading, fishing, manicure, massage, and laughter are all feel-good things that you can do to make yourself a happier being!

Be blessed and take care of yourself! When you are HAPPY, healthy, and strong, your family will reap the benefits!
