A 2.4 mile addition to Cumberland Road in southwest Tyler is set to open Friday, August 12th! The City of Tyler Street Department and the city officials will be holding a grand opening celebration to announce the completion of the $17.9 million project that will serve as a major east-west connection for the southwest portion of Tyler. The project was paid for by the Half-Cent Sales Tax Fund.  The newly constructed road includes four traffic lanes, raised landscaped medians and sidewalks. The project also included the installation of a bridge over West Mud Creek that will eventually connect to future biking and hiking trails.

The grand opening celebration will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and will be come and go style with refreshments provided and will take place between Blue Mountain Parkway and Cherryhill Drive. From the City of Tyler press release, in regards to parking for the event,

Parking can be accessed from Cumberland Road and Old Jacksonville Highway. Spaces will be blocked off for parking in the right lanes along Cumberland Road from Blue Mountain Boulevard to the barricades, where the tent will be located. There will be no access to the ceremony from Broadway, please enter from Old Jacksonville.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the city plans on opening Cumberland Road from Old Jacksonville Hwy. to Broadway! I for one will be extremely excited about this seeing how I live in the area and it will save me time getting to the retail area on South Broadway by not having to go north to Grande Blvd. or south to FM 2813!
