Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Tyler Monday to honor slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Holding signs and banners participants joined the John Tyler High School Lion Band and marched down Broadway to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church for a program featuring keynote speaker Fred McClure who is the director of the George H.W. Bush Library Foundation at Texas A&M.

Organizers of Tyler Together Race Relations forum said this year’s theme is “A Perspective on Character, Color and Courage in America”.

Tyler joined cities across Texas holding marches, parades and encouraging good works on the national holiday honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

In Dallas, Tyler Native and NFL Hall of Famer Earl Campbell served as the celebrity grand marshal for an MLK parade and festival.
