The tornado, which was rated an EF-5, had winds over 200 mph and was on the ground for 38 minutes. It carved a path over 22 miles long and at times the funnel was nearly a mile wide.

It ranks as the 7th deadliest tornado in U.S. history. The top spot on that deadly list belongs to the Tri-State Tornado which hit Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana back in March of 1925.

The Joplin tornado developed on a hot and humid day in May of 2011 and hit parts of Kansas and Missouri. What made this tornado especially dangerous is that it hit a populated area, including Marcy Hospital in Joplin. The hospital was so severely damaged by the tornado, that one of the towers was rotated four inches on its foundation.

Following an assessment of the damage, it was determined that the existing hospital was structurally unsafe and was eventually demolished. A new hospital was rebuilt and opened in 2015. Sadly though 5 people in the hospital were killed when the tornado hit.
