‘The Conjuring 2’ Featurette Explores the Creepy True Story of the Enfield Haunting
Like its predecessor, The Conjuring 2 is based on an (allegedly) true story, with director James Wan moving the spooky action across the pond to London to explore the famous Enfield Poltergeist case. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return to reprise their roles as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, the latter of whom appears in a new featurette alongside two survivors of the actual haunting.
The Warrens investigated dozens of hauntings throughout their career, including the infamous Amityville case, which makes a cameo appearance at the beginning of The Conjuring 2 — much like the Annabelle doll in the first film. But the main story of James Wan’s horror sequel is the Enfield Poltergeist case, which is the subject of the above video, in which Lorraine Warren and Margaret and Janet Hodgson discuss the terrifying true events that inspired the film.
The short version: the Hodgson family was terrorized by a malevolent spirit, which possessed young Janet and caused quite bit of ruckus in the house, causing objects (and Janet) to levitate, throwing things around, and making all kinds of scary noises. You can hear Janet’s possessed voice in the above video, which includes an unnerving snippet of one of the recordings made back in 1977.
The longer version: while the case is one of the most famous hauntings in history, it was also one of the most heavily scrutinized cases and believed by many to have been a hoax. Janet and Margaret later admitted that while some of the happenings were made-up, the majority of the events were the result of an actual haunting.
The Conjuring 2 brings to the screen another real case from the files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Reprising their roles, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who, in one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations, travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.
The Conjuring 2 also stars Frances O’Connor, Madison Wolfe, Franka Potente and Maria Doyle Kennedy, and hits theaters on June 10.
