“It’s no cost to the taxpayer”, said Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham who presented Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith Tuesday with seven Dodge Chargers.

The vehicles which had been in use by the DA’s office will now be put back on the road for use by the Sherriff’s Department’s Criminal Investigation and added Patrol Units.

The cars are each equipped with radios at a cost of $38,000 paid for by the District Attorney’s office Drug Forfeiture Fund. The cars originally were also purchased with confiscated drug money.

Sheriff Smith said today’s donation allows the department to add very much needed vehicles to its fleet and make it through this year without any added expense to purchase new vehicles which is a tremendous savings to the taxpayer.

Sheriff Smith says his goal is to rotate the patrol cars out every four years.
