Shakira endorsed Barack Obama for President in 2008, and later played at his inauguration. Now it looks like Obama is returning the favor as earlier this week he appointed the world’s foremost hip shaker to his Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

“This is a tremendous honor for me,” Shakira said in response to getting the nod. “I am humbled that my philanthropic experience could be helpful or that my voice can be used to amplify the message and work of the President and this Commission.”

The philanthropic work Shakira speaks of includes funding schools in Haiti, South Africa and her native Colombia through the Barefoot Foundation, which the 34-year-old founded back in 1995.

“I am grateful that these impressive individuals have chosen to dedicate their talents to serving the American people at this important time for our country,” Obama said of Shakira and the three other (non Grammy-winning) appointees. “I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead.”
