The Smith County Sheriff's Office has received word of scammers returning to East Texas. These scammers are using an old trick to try and get money.

They are targeting seniors calling as a grand child who has been arrested and is in need of bail money or they have been in an accident and need money to pay for car damages.

If you don't recognize the voice as that of your actual grand child, they say they have a cold.

From there, the scammer will hand the phone to someone else saying they are a police officer or attorney and give instructions on how to send money or will ask you to purchase a gift card and call them back with the card numbers.

If you receive a call like this, you are asked to hang up and call the Smith County Sheriff's Office to verify the story. Also, the sheriff's office says they do not ask for cash or gift cards to pay for bail.
