The brightly colored clown suit of Stephen King‘s It miniseries is now a thing of the past. In the upcoming Warner Bros. film, Pennywise is sporting another style of garb.

up close look at the new menacing clown, and now
Entertainment Weekly has debuted the first full look at Pennywise’s costume in
It. The new outfit looks like something from nightmares of the past, or what you’d find in the back of a dusty antique shop. The new Pennywise, who will be played by
Bill Skarsgard, sports a dusty grey Harlequin suit with a ruff collar, puffy shoulders and flared bloomers:

Mad Men‘s Janie Bryant, who told
EW the historical influences of the suit reflect the agelessness of the creature. “The costume definitely incorporates all these otherworldly past lives, if you will,” Bryant told
EW. “He is definitely a clown from a different time.” Based on the photo alone you can definitely see Elizabethan, Victorian and Renaissance inspirations in Pennywise’s new look. What’s most creepy though is how much the clown has outgrown his costume.

Bryant added that fitting the costume a certain way to Skarsgard was essential to give the evil clown a youthful quality and emphasize Skarsgard’s age. The actor, 25, is much younger than Tim Curry was when he played Pennywise in his mid-40s in the 1990 miniseries. The younger casting choice is something Skarsgard previously likened to
the clown’s connection to kids. “The clown is the manifestation of children’s imaginations, so there’s something child-like about that,” Skarsgard told EW.
It will be directed by
