This week's featured pet:
Dustie

This is Dustie. She is a 4 year old female red and white Australian cattle dog. Dustie walks on a leash, likes other dogs, and likes to ride in a car.
She is friendly and playful and needs to be a country dog. Dustie has been spayed and is current on all her vaccinations. She will come with a gift of 30 days of free pet health insurance.
The Humane Society of East Texas holds weekly adopt-a-thons at Broadway Square Mall in Tyler each Saturday from 11a to 4p.
In 2008, the Humane Society changed its name to the Humane Society of East Texas and made the moral decision to no longer euthanize animals and to become a “selective admissions, no-kill animal sanctuary”.
From 1969 until 2008, the Humane Society provided housing for animals picked up by Animal Control officers in both the City of Tyler and Smith County as well as surrounding smaller towns. During those years, our small animal shelter received approximately 376,000 dogs and cats to care for and ultimately adopt or humanely euthanize. To date, approximately 69,000 animals have been placed in caring homes. By early 2008, the Humane Society of East Texas terminated their contract with both the City of Tyler and Smith County Animal Control and became what our community has wanted us to be. Our focus now is to save lives, not take lives and to find loving, forever homes for these homeless animals.
The Humane Society of East Texas currently houses large breed dogs in outdoor dirt pens constructed approximately 35 years ago. These pens are now in various stages of deterioration and the dog houses in each pen sit on wooden pallets to raise them off the ground. These wooden pallets provide ideal conditions for disease carrying rodents to build their nests but create unsanitary conditions for dogs and customers. Dogs confined in these small enclosures do not get proper exercise and often become aggressive which makes them unlikely candidates for adoption. Large rotting railroad ties and concrete blocks are currently placed around the fence lines of these adjoining kennels to discourage dogs from digging out of their pens or into adjoining pens making the outside kennels very unsightly and unappealing to potential adopters.
We now have plans to construct an outdoor kennel complex that will house these large breed dogs in a new, modern facility providing them the space they need to receive adequate exercise and protection from the elements while they wait for permanent, loving homes. The estimated expense for the new outdoor kennel complex is $156,000. To date, $37,000 has been donated leaving a balance of $119,000 needed to complete the project. With the completion of this endeavor, our animal shelter will be much more appealing and safe for our customers and more humane for our large breed dogs. Won’t you please help us reach this goal?
The cancellation of animal sheltering contracts cost the Humane Society approximately $200,000 in revenue each year, which was approximately 38% of our annual revenue. Until now, the Humane Society has been self-sufficient and has not had to ask for financial support from our friends and supporters, but that has changed. With the financial support of our friends and supporters we will be able to complete this project and provide these dogs with the kind of housing they deserve. Remember, The Humane Society of East Texas is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit animal welfare organization and your contributions are tax deductible. Please feel free to contact me at (903) 360-0253.
Thank you for your support.
