No Swimming Alert for South Texas Beach

Health officials in Galveston have advising swimmers to avoid some parts of a popular South Texas recreation area because of elevated levels of bacteria.

The Health District says concentrated amounts of bacteria are present at 12 locations along the Bolivar Peninsula.

The peninsula is a narrow strip of land on the Gulf Coast in eastern Galveston County, about 50 miles southeast of Houston.

District officials regularly test water conditions in the area, and additional testing will determine how long the advisory will continue.

No elevated levels were found on nearby Galveston Island.
