First he was the Rock. Now Dwayne Johnson is the Eagle.

Or at least he can turn into one, as the voice of the demigod Maui in Disney’s next animated feature, Moana. In the film’s new TV spot, which played over the weekend during NBC’s Olympics coverage, Johnson’s character joins with a young teenager on an adventure across the ocean. He has magic weapons and magic moving tattoos and at one point while soaring through the sky, he briefly turns into an eagle. First he turns Journey 2 the Mysterious Island into a hit and now this? Is there anything the Rock can’t do?

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Moana:

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes Moana, a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.

Even more than the Rock’s impressive powers of transmogrification, what hooks me here is the gorgeous animation. The color and texture of the water in the ocean; the way Moana swings through the air on a rope or flings a weapon. In recent years, Disney’s imagery has really come to rival the standards of Pixar. Visually, Moana looks like it’s in a class by itself. It opens in theaters on November 23.
