Whatever happened to being a good neighbor?

A Michigan man has been found guilty of assault after opening fire on an African American teen who was asking for directions as he came to his home.

According to CBS News, Jeffery Zeigler who is a white male was charged with attempted murder as he opened fired on fourteen –year old Brennan Walker as he missed a school bus in April.

Brennan knocked on the door and Zeigler’s wife screamed as she thought a burglar was breaking into their home.  Jeffery then grabbed his shotgun and opened fire as he ran away.

Dana Zeigler spoke in court over the incident:

I saw a black person standing at my door and I screamed at him and I asked him what he was doing there?  He tells me that he is going to school and at that point he approaches the door, forward momentum, comes forward, opens the screen door, and puts his hand on the door handle again, as though he's coming into my house.

Since the incident Zeigler expressed remorse for what has happened, but Brennan’s mom felt entirely different as she said race was definitely a factor in what happened.

Zeigler said if he could go back to that incident he would have taken the young man to school.

His sentencing is scheduled for November.
