To highlight the growing need for awareness about cystic fibrosis (CF), the CF Foundation recognizes the month of May as National CF Awareness Month. During this time — and all year-round — volunteers and people with CF and their families unite to help shine a spotlight on what CF is and the progress being made toward a cure.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

Throughout the month we will be spotlighting CF with ways that you can help, along with stories of some very special people who have made finding a cure for CF their goal.

We will spotlight Tyler’s own Maci Drewry and her battle with the disease and how she has become a local hero and ambassador for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at only 9 years old. We will also be spotlighting her dear friend Davis Cleveland, 10-year-old star of Disney Channel’s ‘Shake It Up,’ and together their efforts have raised an extreme amount of money to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.
