Madonna Confirms She Dated Tupac in Howard Stern Interview [LISTEN]
Madonna sat down with Howard Stern earlier today (March 11), and -- as is the case with most of Howard's interviews -- it managed to be revealing and candid. Madonna opened up about a time she thought her career was over early on, her initial move to New York City and even confirmed a dating rumor the general public took as actual fact for years, without official confirmation.
Madonna referred back to her infamous 1994 interview with David Letterman (you can check out the NSFW video on YouTube) in which she said the f-word 14 times during the show. It was while talking about said interview that she revealed the reason she was so hyped up, and it had everything to do with Tupac Shakur -- who she was dating at the time. She said, "I was in a weird mood that day. I was dating Tupac Shakur at the time and the thing is he got me all riled up on life in general. So when I went on the show, I was feeling very gangsta."
The revelation shouldn't come as a surprise to many Madonna fans, especially if they've followed the rumor-mill that surrounds her, but there's never been official confirmation before today.
Madonna also went on to talk about a time she thought her career was over due to a wardrobe malfunction she suffered when she performed "Like a Virgin" live for the first time. When her shoe fell off during the performance, she tried to get it back. She said, "I just dove for [my shoe] on the ground, my dress went up and my butt was showing...and I didn't know my skirt was up. So I proceeded to sing the song laying down on the ground. I was just making the best of a situation, which is what I do," she explained. "After I got off stage, my manager was white as a ghost. He looked at me and he said, 'Do you know what you just did?' and I looked at him and I said, 'Yeah, I lost my shoe onstage, and he was like 'No, your butt was showing for the entire song.' and he looked at me and he said, 'Your career is over.'"
At the time, Madonna says she kind of believed her career was over, but she managed to recover from it pretty well -- obviously.
The "Rebel Heart" singer also went on to talk about the first time she moved to New York City, and how dangerous things were at the time. Not only was her apartment broken into numerous times, but she was raped by a man who portrayed himself as "friendly." She said (quote via E! News), "I was going to a dance class and the door was locked and I needed money for the payphone. [A man] gave it to me...he was a very friendly guy. I trusted everybody." The man then convinced her to make the call where he lived. Madonna went on, "I was raped. The first year I lived in New York was crazy."
When asked why she didn't report the rape to police, Madonna explained, "You’ve already been violated. So, do you want to talk about it? Do you want to make it public? It’s just not worth it, it’s too humiliating."
