Laverne Cox on Caitlyn Jenner’s Visibility: ‘I Don’t Want That Life’

Laverne Cox might appreciate some of the perks of fame—an Emmy nod, a Madam Tussaud's statue rendered in her honor—but let her be clear: Mega-stardom is not a bullet point on her to-do list.

The Orange is the New Black star, who was cited by Caitlyn Jenner as an inspiration during the former Olympian's speech at last week's ESPY Awards, said on last night's Late Late Show that she admires Jenner for her courage, especially when she has little privacy.

Cox shared that though her own transition came with struggles and financial strain, she had the luxury of space and time to reflect while coming to terms with her identity during her twenties.

"It's completely different from Caitlyn's very public experience," she tells James Corden in the clip above, before mentioning that the first episode of I am Cait will find Jenner constantly dodging paparazzi. "She's such a sweet woman, loves her family [but] just thinking about the whole paparazzi life that she has, I don't want that life."

"There's no way she could have transitioned privately, and I think she's doing it very eloquently and beautifully," Cox adds.

Jenner's speech to the ESPYs audience touched on the need for education, a push for self-acceptance and how support from friends and family can make all the difference for trans kids who struggle with coming out.

"...trans people deserve something vital," she insisted. "They deserve your respect. And from that respect comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society and a better world for all of us."
