Janelle Monae Explains Importance of Having Fun on The Eephus Tour
If you didn't get a chance to watch the Wondaland crew on The Eephus Tour, presented by Toyota, this summer, the experience was a celebration for everyone in the building – just ask Janelle Monae.
The singer understands that the majority of her fans are working class people who want to dance the night away after a stressful day – she once had a 9-to-5 job just like them. That's why she and the Wondaland team make it a priority to keep the turn up going at all times.
"We genuinely engage with our fans like they want to have fun," the "Yoga" singer states. "These people come to party. They're working 9-to-5, some of them, like we were at one point in time in our lives. We hated our jobs but we had to pay the bills."
And Wondaland admirers definitely experienced all of the fun-filled festivities. Lines were wrapped around the block for The Eephus Tour stops in cities like Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C. Inside the venues, screaming fans scattered around to get close to the stage to witness the energetic performances from Monae, Deep Cotton, Jidenna, St. Beauty and Roman GianArthur -- even a little girl dressed just like Janelle Monae showed up to support. Her mini-me made it onstage to flaunt her look too.
"They want to party. And we want to give that to them. That's what we do. When we're making music, we're not all cerebral like 'This note needs to go above the D because it's...' No we're not," The Electric Lady creator explains.
It's the same backstage for the crew. "We're fixing each other drinks, cooking, we're chilling, having fun. You know, we're just having an amazing experience as we're going through this process."
The "technical" stuff like being in interviews is less to be desired, but it's all worth it to get to perform. "The fun is when we step on that stage," Monae continues. "You're feeling us genuinely enjoying each other."
It shows too. One fan expressed that the show was "amazing... beyond words." She also added that it was the "best live performance I've ever seen in my whole entire life, seriously."
