Happy Birthday to Dave of De La Soul! The artist formerly known as Trugoy turned 49 years old today (Sept. 21).

David Jude Jolicoeur has been making stellar music with his former high school buddies in De La Soul for almost 30 years. Alongside Posdnous and P.A. Mase, Trugoy helped blaze a trail for quirky, left-leaning hip-hop with their landmark debut 3 Feet High & Rising. De La matured and continued to evolve throughout the 1990s and 2000s, with albums like De La Soul Is Dead, Stakes Is High, and The Grind Date sustaining their reputation for outside-the-box ideas and stellar album-making.

Outside of De La, Dave and Pos dropped the low-key project De La Soul's Plug 1 & Plug 2 presents... First Serve in 2012. De La Soul reconvened as a trio for 2016s very well-received ...and the Anonymous Nobody, which featured fellow rap icons like Snoop Dogg and Pete Rock, as well as veteran rockers David Byrne and Damon Albarn, alongside trap star 2 Chainz and soul queens Jill Scott and Estelle.
