It's not everyday that we get a real live legend stopping through East Texas but a musical legend who fronted not one but TWO legendary bands is in the area promoting his new children's book and musical!

You may remember Skip Martin as the lead vocalist for the legendary funk band "The Dazz Band". Skip won a Grammy with the group in 1982 for their classic hit "Let It Whip" while amassing both platinum and gold plaques with the group.

Then in 1989 after James "JT" Taylor left the group to pursue a solo career, Martin was tapped by Kool & The Gang to be their new lead singer. Skip held it down for nearly 20 years before the original group reunited and thankfully, due to his still close relationship with The Dazz Band, Martin returned to the group to reassume his lead singer duties.

Even after all that success, Martin is still working and delivering some awesome stuff. He has a new song out right now featuring  A LOT OF SUPERSTARS covering a Curtis Mayfield classic "People Get Ready". When I say A LOT, I'm not kidding, over 20 artists are on this record like:

  • AZ Yet
  • The Dazz Band
  • Doug E. Fresh
  • Taylor Dayne
  • Howard Hewitt
  • John P. Kee
  • Ray Parker Jr.
  • Cece Peniston
  • Tony Terry
  • Neal McCoy
  • Stevie Wonder on harmonica and so many more!

But the reason Skip is in East Texas is because he's promoting a new children's book and musical he wrote called "Morgan The Clydesdale Pony". The story is about a Clydesdale horse who dreams of running in the Kentucky Derby and the power of believing in your dreams.

Melz On The MIC sat down and spoke with Mr. Martin about his career, his new book and he blesses us with a LIVE in studio performance of an unreleased song called "Do Not Disturb Sign".
