Frank Ocean Producer, Malay, Explains What the Hold Up Is on ‘Boys Don’t Cry’

Frank Ocean's producer, Malay, has finally broken his silence about what the heck is taking so long for Frank to drop Boys Don't Cry. Well, kinda.

Yesterday (Aug. 15) during his Reddit AMA, Malay, who previously had said that he wouldn't be commenting on the album delay at all, finally said something about what's going on with the project.

"I respect that you don’t want us to ask about BDC and when it’s going to come out. So in the interest of asking a question that acknowledges those boundaries while still addressing the elephant in the room, I’d like to know what you think about how fans have interacted with the rollout to this point," a fan said, as reported by Fader. "I think the major pain point for fans has been the fact that Frank has led us to believe there’s something coming, and then he hasn’t communicated with us at all."

It's true—Frank has been kind of shady with all of the teasing. The fan ran down the list, from the library card on his site suggesting the album was coming in July, to that strange looped video that everyone freaked out about because they thought it was a livestream.

"I feel like I’ve put some amount of trust in Frank and gotten really excited about the rollout he’s chosen to give us, but I believe that’s been betrayed to an extent," Arrogantdesperado wrote.

At that point, Malay felt compelled to respond, saying that basically, the project is still undergoing edits.

"First of all we all massively appreciate and love you guys, Frank has told me this himself many times," he wrote. "To be fair tho, art cannot be rushed. It's about making sure the perfect aesthetic for the situation has been reached, to do that, takes constant tweaking, trial and error.. That goes for any creative sitution."  He then said Ocean's process is "very focused and persistent... yet very free."

The AMA continued, touching on when Malay and Frank first met in Atlanta in 2008, their first collaborative project (it was a song for Mario, believe it or not), and even what Frank smells like—"if God was a woman."  Malay also mentioned the "Booty Club."  The producer cryptically said, "everyone will get a ticket to the booty club who wants one."

Obviously, there's still no definitive word on when Boys Don't Cry will drop but in the meantime, a developer has created a site that will tell you exactly when it's live, so at least there's that.
