All the things you've ever wanted to know about October in one place. History, holidays, celebrations and more!

October is an exciting month - with cool weather, Halloween and an excuse to start eating soup and drinking hot chocolate on the reg, it deserves some recognition.

The word 'October' comes from the Latin word 'octo' which means 'eight.' According to the ancient Roman calendar, October was the eighth month of the year, not the tenth as it is now.

The month is known for being recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, German Heritage Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. Along with Halloween - the most obviously popular holiday in October - there is also Columbus Day on Oct. 12 and Boss' Day on Oct. 16. Additionally, October has some pretty fun observances like Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day (Oct. 9), Wear Something Gaudy Day (Oct. 17), Evaluate Your Life Day (Oct. 19) and Cranky Co-Workers Day (Oct. 27). All of those sound like solid reasons to celebrate in my opinion!

Some other fun facts include:

  • Zodiac signs Libra and Scorpio are both in October
  • Opal is the traditional birthstone for October birthdays
  • The month of October is never mentioned in one of Shakespeare's works
  • Walt Disney World opened for the first time on Oct. 1, 1971
  • The last week of October is the only week of the year that all four of the national sport divisions in North America (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL) have scheduled games

And there you have it, you are now an expert on all things related to October!
