Crowd-funding helped make Justin Simien’s Dear White People movie into the cultural success it became, but why stop there? Netflix has officially given a series order to a new Dear White People series extending the brand, with Simien onboard to write and direct.

According to Netflix’s official announcement, the 10-episode, 30-minute comedy will follow the 2014 film (itself emerged from Simien’s 2012 concept trailer), the synopsis reading:

Set among a diverse group of students of color as they navigate a predominantly white Ivy League college where racial tensions are often swept under the rug, Dear White People is a send up of “post-racial” America that also weaves a universal story about forging one’s own unique path.

Eyed for a 2017 debut, Dear White People will also feature Simien writing all ten episodes, as well directing the premiere installment. No cast announcement as of yet, though the film included The Walking Dead alum Tyler James Williams, upcoming Thor: Ragnarok (and Creed) star Tessa Thompson, as well as 24 great Dennis Haysbert.

Says Simien of the new series.:

During the film’s release, I had the pleasure to speak with hundreds of students and faculty across a variety of college campuses dealing with these very issues in real time. I’m so grateful to have this platform – not only to give a voice to those too often unheard in our culture, but to also tell great stories from new points of views. From day one, Lionsgate has been remarkably supportive of the vision for the show, and working with Netflix is every bit as harmonious as I’d imagined it would be. Bringing this show to such a vibrant platform is an honor I don’t take lightly.

Dear White People will also join Lionsgate TV’s other Netflix property, Orange is the New Black, while you can check out the film version’s trailer below, and await further details.
