Dave Chappelle Presses for Police Reform in His Ohio Hometown
Dave Chappelle wants the police department in his home town of southwestern Ohio to do things differently. He said that after a New Year's Eve celebration turned ugly.
During the celebration, officers were accused of using unnecessary force to disperse crowds, including using a police cruiser and stun guns. Afterwards, more than 100 locals complained and eventually the police chief resigned.
"Huge gaffe New Year's Eve," said Chappelle. "Given what the culture of our town is like, council has a tremendous opportunity to be a leader in progressive policing ... Now we are being policed by what feels like an alien force ... In this Trump year, this is an opportunity to show everybody that local politics reigns supreme."
Chappelle was also quick to point out that he isn't against the local police, because they've helped him in the past. He also said that he wasn't taking sides, just expressing concern for how policing will be carried out in the future.
"In all fairness, the crowd was drunk ... Because it was New Year's Eve," he stated. "And I left early, because nobody felt completely right, so I am trying to be balanced and fair."
