I'm a believer in the mantra "to each his own". Do I think it's odd that someone will not eat meat? Sure. How else have humans survived for thousands of years? A combination of meat and vegetables. But there are some that just want nothing to do with eating meat.

You would think that it would be hard in Texas to find support for a meatless diet. Well, you would be wrong.

Dallas has been named a top ten city for vegans in the country, coming in at number eight.

The magazine Vegnews put out this list and the reasons for the high ranking.

For one, Dallas has the Texas Veggie Fair, which had 12,000 attendees last year. This year's festival is October 21.

There are many restaurants that offer vegans versions of Texas favorites at Spiral Diner and Bakery. texashillcountry.com lists V-Eats Modern Vegan and El Palote Panadería, which serves vegan Mexican food, as two other choices.

Being a vegan is more about food, though. To them, it's a lifestyle of being cruelty free to animals. Kat Mendenhall Boots is one example found in Dallas. They make boots that are leather free and made of a polyurethane biodegradable fabric that is described on their website as "soft and durable, highly stain and water-resistant, and breathable".
