Horace Julian Bond, a writer, educator and politician known best as an activist and leader in the Civil Rights Movement, has died.

The Southern Poverty Law Center announced that Bond passed away on Saturday night in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., of "complications of cardiovascular disease." He was 75.

As a student at Morehouse College, Mr. Bond was one of the founders and organizers of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC, or "Snick").

His life was spent as a persistent opponent of racial discrimination, and for that we are grateful and thankful.
